Fraternities can seem like an impenetrable part of American college life. They serve as social hubs, create bonds of brotherhood and promise to produce future leaders.
But in recent years, the same organizations have come under increased scrutiny, leading to calls for colleges to stop funding fraternities. Over the past decade, there have been dozens of high-profile hazing deaths involving fraternities — including four in 2017. Recently, the parents of Timothy Piazza, a Penn State fraternity pledge who died in 2017 after consuming a large amount of alcohol, settled a lawsuit with the national fraternity Beta Theta Pi; the agreement requires the fraternity’s houses to become alcohol-free by 2020.
Six months after the arrest of Ross Ulbricht, the alleged founder of Silk Road, the largest online marketplace for illicit drugs and other contraband, business has never been better for the website, according to a new report to be released Wednesday by the Digital Citizens Alliance obtained exclusively by TIME.
There are approximately 13,648 listings for drug on the Darknet website, which requires anonymization technology to known as Tor to access, compared to the 13,000 listed shortly before Ulbricht’s arrest.
First the dotted line on Chinese maps lost two of its hyphens in 1952, when, in a moment of socialist bonhomie with Vietnam, Chairman Mao Zedong abandoned Chinese claims to the Gulf of Tonkin. Then, on July 12, 2016, an international tribunal ruled that the now nine-dash demarcation could not be used by Beijing to make historic claims to the South China Sea, parts of which are claimed by six governments.
Never seen a Star Wars movie but your friends already bought you a ticket to The Force Awakens? Don’t worry. We have you covered with your basic terms. Major spoilers ahead.
The Original Trilogy
Star Wars is made up of three trilogies that were (illogically) made out of order. First came episodes IV, V and VI. That’s Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977, The Empire Strikes Back in 1980 and Return of the Jedi in 1983.

Sue Simmons, a long-time anchor with New York's WNBC, cursing without realizing she was on the air
Simmons who was unaware she and co-anchor Chuck Scarborough were doing the promo segment for the 11 pm news live used the obscenity apparently because the wrong news footage was being shown while she was teasing a story on rising supermarket prices.
Glee, the hit show about a high school Glee club, has very sharp claws, which is one reason kids like it so much. It is routinely, if hilariously, cruel (the sweet jock is described as so dumb, “he’s cheating off a girl who thinks the square root of 4 is rainbows”). But no darker current–let alone motivation for parental monitoring–had occurred to me until I recently heard a bright, earnest youth minister tell a group of high school kids that he thought Glee was “anti-Christian.
Sharing your birthday with someone else you know can be fun — or stressful. You might get double the party, but chances are you’ll have to share the spotlight.
This weekend, millions of Americans may have that feeling when the country’s most popular birth date comes around. Birth data shows that Sept. 9 is the most common birthday in the U.S., and September is the busiest month for births overall.
The world's largest free-flying American flag was torn in half on Tuesday evening after severe thunderstorms in Wisconsin. The Acuity Insurance flag, located in the company's headquarters in Sheboygan, is measured at 70' by 140', and weighs 340 pounds. It is nearly 100-feet taller than the Statue of Liberty, according to Acuity Insurance's website. Constructing the flagpole in the area, where temperatures can reach below zero-degrees, was also a feat in of itself over 500 gallons of paint were used to layer the 420,000 pound pole, and 680 cubic yards of concrete were applied for its foundation.
Timothée Chalamet and I are on the run, chasing down Sixth Avenue on a bright September day in search of a place to talk. The restaurant in Greenwich Village where we had planned to meet ended up getting swarmed by NYU students while I was waiting for him, chattering excitedly to one another—“Timothée Chalamet is here!” “Shut up!” “Yeah, he’s right outside!”—so, trying to avoid a deluge of selfie seekers, I bolt from the table, tapping Chalamet on the shoulder where he stands under the awning, on the phone, and we make our escape.
